Difficulty Level: Easy Height: 3400 ft
Lohagad fort is very close to Lonavala and one can reach by train (get down at Malavali) and buses as well. Both Visapur and Lohagad forts can be covered in a single day, but definitely u will be exhausted. So better plan Lohagad alone one day. Both Visapur and Bhaje caves can be covered on a single day. Monsoon is the best time to visit these places. One can have breath taking view from the top of Lohagad. On the top of Lohagad there are so many places to visit and admire, so plan 2-3 hours on the top. Most of the fortification is intact and it is definitely one of the best fort in Maharastra.
Lohgad is a 2000 years old fascinating fort, which was built in the vicinity of famous Karla and Bhaje caves. The main purpose of the fort is to protect the important routes of trade and Buddhist followers as well.
You will start climbing right from the lohagaon village and one can reach the top in 20-25 minutes. The first darwaja is Ganesh darwaja and then Narayana and Hanuman darwaja’s will come. The last one is Maha darwaja. Immediately after entering Maha darwaja is the dargah, and to the right of it is Shiva temple. From there 10 minutes wals will take you to the huge polygonal lake with 16 sides. From here move towards left side, after 5 minutes walk u will reach Vinchu kata (Scorpion tail). Vinchu kata is around 1500 meters in length and 30 meters in wide. U can find breath-taking views on both sides of vinchu kata. Don’t forget to take a snap of yourself as vinchu kata background. It is my favorite location beyond the entrance fortification.
Ways to Reach:
1. From Malavali:
Get down at Malavali station and cross the Express-Highway and walk down to Bhaje village. From there one has to walk around 1.5 kms to reach Gaimukh Khind. From here right route will lead to Lohgad and the left route will take you to Visapur. From here around 1 Km walk will take you to the base of the fort, there is a village called Lohgaon. You have to pass through four doors/darwaja’s to reach the top.
2. From Lonavala:
Better come by your own vehicle (preferably 4-wheeler), you will approach Lohagad from backside. Here the road is very bac. Better avoid two wheelers on this route, especially in the monsoon. You can have a glimpse of Vinchu Kata and extensive fort walls. The forts Tung and Tikona are seen very near from here.
3. From Panshet:
Take a right turn at Panshet and approach Pawna dam and from there u have take the road to Lonavala and after traveling around 10 Kms. U have to take right turn to reach Lohagad. But this is a long route and one can cover Bedsa caves and Pawna dam on the way. This is my favorite route in the monsoon.
